AC out right now?
Call or text us, then check these three things in the meantime.
Breakers. The condenser outside and the furnace or air handler inside sit on two different breakers. Flip a tripped one back once; if it trips a second time, leave it off.
Thermostat. Mode on Cool, setpoint under the room temperature. A blank or dim screen usually means new batteries.
Filter. Replace it if it is clogged. If you see ice on the copper lines, set the system to off with the fan on so it thaws.
An elderly or sick person in a hot house comes first: get them into a cooler space before you troubleshoot. What to do in the first hour.

What we can get fixed

What it usually costs
The ranges below come from national price guides. Treat them as a yardstick, not a quote and not a San Joaquin County figure. Your price comes from the technician after the diagnosis, before any work, and turning it down is your call.

Hot afternoons, cool nights
Stockton heat has a shape. The airport averaged 18.9 days at 100°F or hotter a year from 1991-2020. Over 2016-2025 it averaged 29.2, and 2024 set the record with 49. Through October 24, 2026, 2026 had 19.
The nights are the other half. In July the average high is now 96.8°F and the average low is 61.1°F, a swing of about 36 degrees. The Delta breeze that comes up the valley most summer evenings is why. A healthy system that falls a few degrees behind at 5 p.m. usually catches up by midnight. One that never catches up has a problem worth a service call.
The hardest hours for the equipment are also the most expensive ones to run it. PG&E's standard time-of-use plan charges its peak price from 4 to 9 p.m. every day. How to cool the house for less.

Older houses, older systems
About 44% of the 258,617 homes in the 27 ZIP codes we cover were built before 1980, and another 27% between 1980 and 1999 (Census ACS 2020-2024). Central Stockton is older still: in ZIP 95204, around the Miracle Mile, the median home was built in 1955. In houses that age it is worth asking whether the ducts were ever resized or sealed for the current system.
The newer towns run the other way. Most homes in Lathrop, Mountain House and south Manteca were built after 2000, so the first systems there are now reaching the age where replacement comes up. Repair or replace.

Published 2026 national figures put most AC repairs at $250 to $700, with a $375 average (Fixr), or $150 to $650 for common fixes (This Old House). A capacitor is at the low end; a compressor runs $600 to $3,000 or more. Stockton prices vary by company, so get the price in writing before work starts.
Is it worth repairing an AC that is more than 15 years old?
Often not, if the repair is a big one. A compressor or coil on an old system is a lot of money for a unit near the end of its life. A capacitor or contactor on the same unit is cheap and usually worth doing. This Old House puts the typical life of a home cooling system at 12 to 15 years.
My AC runs all afternoon and the house still hits 85. Is it broken?
Not always. On a 105 degree afternoon an older or undersized system can fall behind and still be working. The test is the evening: Stockton's July nights now average about 61.1°F at the airport, so a healthy system should catch up after sunset. If it never does, or the air at the vents isn't cold, something is wrong. A dirty filter and a weak capacitor are the usual causes. A refrigerant leak is the next suspect.
Do I need a permit to replace my air conditioner in Stockton?
Yes. California requires a permit for an HVAC replacement and a test of the new system by an independent rater, and the contractor pulls the permit. In the city of Stockton that goes through the Permit Center. A contractor who offers to skip the permit is skipping the test that checks your ducts.
Who will come to my house?
An independent HVAC company that serves your ZIP and holds a California C-20 license, the classification for heating and air conditioning work. Stockton Cooling Line is a referral service: we hand your request to a local company so you don't have to phone around. You can check any contractor's license on the CSLB website.
